| I am attempting to rebuild an old rod that Ive had for along time, it is an 8 foot two piece rod,, it is too long for me and has too few guides,,only 4 guides, so I cut the tip off 6 inches and cut the butt off 12 inches,, making it a 6' 6" rod, I plan on painting the blank a red color and goin back with 8 stainless steel guides with silver metallic underwraps and black guide wraps and a stainless tip top, 10 inch rear grip, aluminum real seat, and an 8 inch fore grip,,, here is a pic of the name brand rod

I used a hacksaw to cut the rod with

I removed all the guides and wraps

And Im using a razor blade to remove the white finish from the rod and then I plan on painting the rod a red color, Im still tryin to figure out the best way to paint the blank, If anybody has experience in roduilding , the help will be appreciated!! I wouldnt be goin thru all this trouble to rebuild this old rod, but Ive had it for along time and it survived the bottom of my boat during the trotlining days, so I know it is a tuff one,LOL!

| If you want a decent finish that will actually last and continue to look good, use a decent quality 2 part epoxy or urethane finish.
Klass Kote is a decent product (2 part epoxy I think) that is targeted to modeling hobbyists. You could also try to tint some permagloss and apply it to the rod. |

| Thanks Gottafish! I surely want a good finish that will hold up and look good,,I checked out the klasskote and it seems to be the way to go but I dont have an airbrush gun,, I wonder,,would I be able to apply it with a brush or my finger?? and the permagloss idea is good too , I guess I could use testors model paint to tint it with, wonder how much testors would be too much or not enuff?? and on the 2 part epoxy (like flexcoat in a lite build?) , I guess I could use testors paint also,, Im thinkin this is the way to go for me, prolly the easiest,LOL!
Drifter, Ill keep Yall posted on this project, dont give up on me,LOL, it looks like its gonna be several weeks to a few months untill I finish this rodbuild!
Cactus Bob, yes its gonna be my anglin/fishin rod,LOL, seriously though, Im hopin it to be a good flathead rod for fishin the Big Black at night,,short to keep close to the boat and not too stiff a tip but kinda stout to keep thems flats away from the log jams,,, You know how much I enjoy buildin fishin stuff,LOL |

Mac, I like the rod alot but it was just too long and didnt have enuff guides on it and the real seat is broken, one tuff blank tho, you and Everett seen it when yall fished with me, prolly dont remember it tho. I have another one just like it and im gonna rebuild it too,, as soon as I finish this one and I have an old rod of Freds that his Dad gave him and im gonna rebuild it too, but im gonna try to stay as close as original on it as I can,,
Any of yall know the difference between E-glass and a Fiberglass rod?? How do I tell the difference, if any ?? |

| I got the rod painted today, I put on 3 coats of primer, 5 coats of paint, and 4 coats of clear,,, no particular reason for the number of coats, thats just what it took to look good to me
Here are a few pics

| e-glass is just the type of fiberglass material used to build the blank. I think s-glass is the other type available which actually is lighter, stiffer and stronger but more expensive than e-glass blanks. Because it's stiffer, it's also easier to break.
e-glass is the way to go with cat rods.
This is a shot from the hip. I looked into it several years ago but haven't checked any references lately.
The blank looks good. |

| Thanks for the info and the compliment, Ill try to get some better pics, Im just usin my cell phone for now, when I got home this evening I gave the paint a finger nail test, lol, I know it is prolly too soon, but I couldnt help it,lol,,,the paint held up good and felt real good as compared to the original finish,,
In the pic of the tip it looks real blunt, but it is a size 10 and the butt measures .79 inches |

| reason i say that is I want to know if all that paint is gonna crack! What kind of paint did you use anyways? Some paints have flexibility and others set up hard as a rock and will crack. Hope you got a flexible paint LOL. |
